Why ‘Fan Girl’ is the MMFF Film Everyone’s Talking About

Fresh from glowing reviews from its Japan and Estonia premieres, the latest film from Antoinette Jadaone is about the fan girl in all of us- with brilliant performances from newcomer Charlie Dizon and Paulo Avelino, who’s playing as himself.

If you had one night with your idol, are you ready for the most memorable day of your life?
The story follows Jane (Charlie Dizon), Paulo Avelino’s biggest fan girl. Her obsession with Paulo Avelino (Paulo Avelino plays as himself) leads her to hide at the back of his pick-up truck and follow him “home”. She ends up in an unfamiliar house in an unfamiliar place with an unfamiliar Paulo Avelino, the idol she thought she knew from head to foot, heart and soul.

Described by Asian Movie Pulse as “An intriguing piece of cinematic work” a nd “A bold look at fandom. An engaging if volatile performance” by the Hollywood Reporter, The whole world can finally watch this immersive and captivating film on December 25, 2020.
From it’s World Premiere as the lone Philippine entry at this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival and its European Premiere in Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, FAN GIRL is finally home and is part of the 10 film entries at this year’s MMFF.

Known for his memorable portrayal of characters in the films, I’m Drunk, I Love You, Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral and MMFF 2017’s Best Picture, Ang Larawan, the versatile and well-loved actor, Paulo Avelino, is set to take on another character but this time, he plays as himself. Avelino from Star Magic is paired with an emerging young actress, Charlie Dizon from Rise Artists Studio and Star Magic.
Dizon landed her first lead role in Fan Girl as she was chosen among 600 other aspiring young ladies from all over Metro Manila who auditioned for the role. Since then, Charlie Dizon together with Paulo Avelino went through a series of character and scene studies to prepare them for their respective characters.

And indeed it bore fruits of labor as Paulo Avelino and Charlie Dizon’s tour de force performance for the film was commended by The Hollywood Reporter--
“Also remarkable is the decisiveness with which Filipino star Paulo Avelino, who plays himself, puts his name and body on the line. It is nonetheless an engaging if volatile performance”

“Played with great naturalness by Charlie Dizon. Jane initially comes across as a bird-brain victimized by her own fantasies. As the saying goes, beware of asking the gods for favors; you might get what you wish for”
A household name for romantic comedy films and series such as That Thing Called Tadhana, Alone/Together, Never Not Love You and On The Wings of Love, Antoinette Jadaone takes us this time to the world of fandoms and fantasies. Known for her well-written screenplays and distinct directorial style, Jadaone presents a fresh take on the obsession of Filipinos with love and love teams.

“The rawness with which the story develops and its far from happy conclusions stand out in the career of Jadaone.”--The Hollywood Reporter
