Monumento 1896, A History Theatre Play with a Twist

Never thought that watching a Theatre Play about history can be fun and interesting. I had a chance to watch the play ‘Monumento 1896’ last weekend at the Erehwon Center for the Arts in Quezon City.

‘Monumento 1896’ is an adaptation and directed by Rodel Mercado. The play is tackling about the history that involves Dr. Jose Rizal, Melchora Aquino, Francisco Balagtas, Andres Bonifacio and Lapu-Lapu.

The play is more interesting to watch as they bridge the gap from the past to the present setting. The costumes are very detailed just like the one we are seeing in the books. Gen Z and Millennials can relate watching it since the play has a flavor of the present era and the one we’re enjoying in Social Media.

I think what most audience would enjoy is the character of Ada, the diwata. She’s the bridge between the past and now, and what she does with her character is so interesting.

Other cast members are also good to the eyes which adds to the stage play even better.
